About

Borealia is a weekly note and a growing database of well-made things that happen to be made in Canada.

Why it exists

Several good tools already answer whether something is Canadian. Buy Beaver, Shop Canadian and Made in CA all do verification, and they do it better than a one-person site would. None of them answer the second question, which is whether the thing is any good.

That is the whole job here. We have looked at everything in the database and written a reason for each. If a product cannot earn a sentence about why it is here, it does not go in. The editing is the product.

What this is not

Borealia is not a buy-local campaign, and nothing here asks you to spend money out of obligation. No flag hangs on this site. These things are well made and they happen to be ours, in that order.

How it earns

Submission is free, inclusion has never been for sale, and the site currently earns nothing. If sponsorship arrives it will be labelled on the page where it appears, not buried in a disclosure. Readers forgive commercial interest and do not forgive finding out about it later.

How it is made

Borealia runs on one person, a few entries a week, and a verification pass on every brand before it goes in. Corrections are welcome and get made quickly, particularly on where something is manufactured, which is the one thing this site cannot afford to get wrong.
